Babe’s Turn, 2002
Cor-Ten steel, painted aluminum, copper finial, 7’ x 3’ x 3’, Sculpture courtyard,
Grinnell College
Grinnell, Iowa
For this project I read letters and a video to gain some understanding of this unique, dynamic
woman, Babe Voertmann. She was a vibrant, expressive, playful and deeply intelligent dance instructor at the college. Her impact on students’ lives impressed me. My response to the request to design a memorial sculpture for Babe incorporated references to the body, to movement and a whimsical element.
